The research in the UBC findings simply states that relative detail in painting guides the viewers gaze.  Greater detail attracts the first look, but also encourages repeated looks. Rembrandt experimented with this technique in late 1600.

Rembrandt lighting in photographs refers to the triangular highlight on the subjects cheek.  Rembrandt lighting was named by the painters signature approach to painting light. You can see this pattern of light shown in his self portrait above. Using this lighting technique we have created a nice Rembrandt highlight on our subjects cheek below.
